Mastering the FRCR: Your route to success in clinical radiology

 Clinical radiology is one of the most exciting and rapidly advancing specialities within medicine. The FRCR exam is a route to getting registered with the UK’s General Medical Council (GMC) and becoming eligible to practise as a clinical radiologist in the UK.

FRCR exam pattern

 FRCR is awarded after a rigorous three-part examination: FRCR Part 1, Part 2A, and Part 2B, conducted by the Royal College of Radiologists.

FRCR Part 1

FRCR Part 1 is the foundational examination in the journey towards becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists. The exam evaluates your knowledge of the physical principles that underpin diagnostic medical imaging and of the anatomy needed to perform and interpret radiological studies.

The FRCR Part 1 exam consists of two modules: physics and anatomy. Both modules are conducted over two days, with exams typically held in March, June, and September. Each module is scheduled on a separate day.

FRCR Part 2 A

 FRCR Part 2 A examines candidates on all aspects of clinical radiology and the basic sciences of physics, anatomy and techniques, against the Specialty Training Curriculum for Clinical Radiology. This examination is composed of two papers featuring single best answer (SBA) questions. It is conducted twice annually, typically in April and November.

FRCR Part 2 B

The final stage of the FRCR examination consists of three components: a reporting session, a rapid reporting session, and an oral examination. The reporting sessions are conducted on the same day, while the oral examination is usually held 3 days later.
