What is FRCR?

Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR) is a globally recognised postgraduate radiology qualification awarded by the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR), UK. The FRCR exam consists of three stages: First FRCR (Part 1), FRCR Part 2A, and FRCR Part 2B, designed to assess a candidate’s radiology knowledge, image interpretation skills, reporting ability, clinical decision-making, and readiness for independent radiology practice.

Widely respected by healthcare institutions worldwide, the FRCR qualification is a key milestone for radiologists seeking career progression, specialist recognition, and opportunities within the UK NHS, GMC registration pathways, and international healthcare systems. Recognised as a benchmark of excellence in clinical radiology, the FRCR plays a crucial role in helping radiologists build successful careers in the UK and across the globe.

Eligibility

To be eligible, candidates must successfully pass the First FRCR (Part 1) examination before applying. According to the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR), UK, candidates must also have completed 24 months of formal clinical radiology training by the month of the Part 2A examination. This training should be undertaken within an approved radiology training programme and should provide broad exposure to the core areas of diagnostic radiology.

Exam Structure

Designed to assess advanced clinical radiology knowledge, the FRCR Part 2A examination evaluates a candidate’s understanding of the core subspecialties of radiology and their ability to apply radiological knowledge in clinical practice.

According to the Royal College of Radiologists, the FRCR Part 2A exam is delivered electronically and consists of two papers conducted over two consecutive days. Each paper contains 120 Single Best Answer (SBA) questions and has a duration of three hours.

Booking Guidelines

1. Create an RCR Account

All candidates must create an online RCR account to acquire an RCR number before applying for any FRCR examinations.

  • Existing candidates should use their previously registered account.
  • The name on the RCR account must exactly match the name on the candidate’s passport or government-issued ID.

2. Access the Exam Hub Link

Once you have created an RCR account, you will receive an access link to your RCR-registered email address. Click the link to enter the hub.

3. Start the Booking Process

  • Enter the exam hub and start the exam booking process by navigating to the start button below the pathway.
  • Start by choosing FRCR Clinical Radiology, Anatomy and Physics as your speciality.
  • You can book the exam by filtering the list of available exams by country, city, and date.
  • Once you have chosen the exam you want to book, fill in your personal details. The hub will remember these details for future bookings.
  • After entering your personal details, enter your payment details, review your information, and then press “Continue.”

4. Exam Pathways

  • The FRCR exam hub offers three pathways: Clinical Radiology, Dental Radiology, and Clinical Oncology.
  • During your first FRCR exam booking, you must select your preferred pathway in the exam hub.
  • The portal will then display all FRCR exams you are eligible to apply for within that pathway stage.
  • Always use the same RCR number throughout your FRCR exam preparation and booking process.
  • Using a different RCR number may reset your FRCR radiology exam pathway progress

5. Managing Bookings

  • Candidates appearing for the FRCR exam are expected to manage their exam bookings, cancellations, and rescheduling online during the active booking period.
  • FRCR exam bookings usually close at least eight weeks before the examination date.
  • After the booking deadline, the RCR exams team may allow rescheduling requests, but cancellations are generally not permitted.
  • Most FRCR radiology exams provide multiple booking options to support candidates during their FRCR exam preparation journey.

6. Before You Book the Exam

  • If you are applying for the FRCR exam for the first time, register on the RCR website at least one week before the booking window opens.
  • This helps ensure your details are updated in the exam hub before FRCR exam bookings begin.
  • Candidates who have previously appeared for an FRCR radiology exam should continue using the same RCR number instead of creating a new account.
  • Before starting your FRCR exam preparation journey, log in early, update all mandatory profile details, and select your exam pathway in advance.

7. Cancellation and Rescheduling

  • Log in to your FRCR exam account and open your exam history section.
  • Select ‘View’ beside the FRCR exam you wish to manage.
  • To cancel your FRCR exam booking, choose the ‘Cancel Booking’ option and complete the cancellation process.

8.Payment

  • Payment for every FRCR exam booking must be completed immediately during the booking process.
  • Candidates must make separate payments for each FRCR exam they apply for.
  • An 80% refund is available if the FRCR exam booking is cancelled before the booking closing date.
  • No refund will be issued for cancellations made after the FRCR radiology exam’s closing deadline.
  • Candidates can reschedule their FRCR exam before the booking closing date, although an administrative fee will apply each time.
