FRCR Part 2B consists of three components:
All components are delivered digitally using the risr/assess platform.
Candidates are presented with 25 plain radiographs, each accompanied by a brief clinical history. They are required to write a concise report and recommend the next appropriate management step. The examination lasts 120 minutes.
The Long Case component consists of six complex imaging cases completed in 75 minutes. Cases may include multiple imaging modalities such as CT, MRI, Ultrasound, and Nuclear Medicine, requiring structured radiology reports and clinical interpretation.
The Oral Examination lasts 60 minutes and is divided into two 30-minute sessions with two pairs of examiners. Candidates are assessed on 12 cases in total across a range of radiology subspecialties and imaging modalities.
FRCR Part 2B is scored across the Short Case Reporting, Long Case Reporting, and Oral Examination components. Candidates generally need to meet the required standard across the exam components according to the RCR’s established scoring system. If a candidate fails overall, they must re-sit the entire examination, as passes in individual components cannot be carried forward.
Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR) is a globally recognised postgraduate radiology qualification awarded by the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR), UK. The FRCR exam consists of three stages: First FRCR (Part 1), FRCR Part 2A, and FRCR Part 2B, designed to assess a candidate’s radiology knowledge, image interpretation skills, reporting ability, clinical decision-making, and readiness for independent radiology practice.
Widely respected by healthcare institutions worldwide, the FRCR qualification is a key milestone for radiologists seeking career progression, specialist recognition, and opportunities within the UK NHS, GMC registration pathways, and international healthcare systems. Recognised as a benchmark of excellence in clinical radiology, the FRCR plays a crucial role in helping radiologists build successful careers in the UK and across the globe.
To be eligible for this part, candidates must successfully pass the FRCR Part 2A examination before they can apply for the final stage of the FRCR assessment pathway. According to the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR), UK, candidates must also have completed 34 months of clinical radiology training by the month of the Part 2B examination
The FRCR Part 2B examination is the final stage of the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR), awarded by the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR), UK. It assesses a candidate’s ability to apply radiological knowledge in clinical practice and demonstrate the competencies expected of a radiologist nearing the end of specialist training.
The Final FRCR Examination comprises three components: short case reporting, long case reporting, and an oral examination. Together, these assess the broad range of radiological skills required for safe and effective clinical practice, including image interpretation, reporting, clinical reasoning, and communication. All components of the examination are delivered digitally using computer workstations.
