The FRCR stands as one of the most relevant and globally respected qualifications in the field of clinical radiology. It offers a clear learning pathway that strengthens knowledge, practical skills, and confidence when analysing medical images. Since imaging is a vital part of diagnosis and guiding treatments in almost every specialty, holding the FRCR helps medicos stay competent, updated, and well-prepared for clinical practice.
It also brings a lot of career advantages, such as opportunities for higher training, better remuneration, and better career prospects worldwide. Most importantly, if you are a doctor planning to settle in the UK, this is the perfect time to start your journey, as the RCR’s latest census report reveals a dangerous shortage of clinical radiologists there. If you are all set to take on the FRCR challenge, here we will give you all the important details regarding the first step, FRCR Part 1, including the exam pattern and upcoming exam dates in 2026.
FRCR Part 1 2026: Exam pattern
FRCR Part 1 is the first step you need to pass in order to achieve this qualification. This exam evaluates an aspirant’s basic understanding and knowledge in clinical radiology. This computer-based exam consists of two modules, namely Physics and Anatomy.
FRCR Part 1: Physics module
The Physics exam consists of 40 MCQs, and candidates have 2 hours to complete the exam. Each question comprises a stem (a question or a statement) and five answers labelled (a) to (e). You will be asked to determine whether each item is true or false. Each right answer is awarded one mark, and there is no negative marking.
FRCR Part 1: Anatomy module
