The Royal College of Radiologists has implemented some major updates to the FRCR Part 2B exam from June 2025 onwards. The RCR introduced the changes to ensure the assessment remains fair, robust, and reflective of current medical practice. However, the previous three-component structure of the exam remains the same with one oral component and two reporting components. But the pass mark for all components will be generated using updated standard-setting methodology.

Here’s a smart guide to help you appear for the FRCR Part 2B exam with clarity and confidence.

Know the format well

The three components include:

  • Short case reporting – 25 plain film cases in 120 minutes
  • Long case reporting – 6 multimodality cases in 75 minutes
  • Oral/viva component – 12 cases in 60 minutes (with four examiners)

All are conducted via the risr/assess digital platform.

Prepare for short case reporting

This section covers chest (50–60%), MSK (40–50%), and occasional AXR films. Your reports must be brief and structured. It should cover key observations, diagnosis, and the next management step. You can expect a mix of adult (75%) and paediatric (25%) cases.

Practice structured long case reports

In this section, you can expect complex cases involving CT, MRI, ultrasound, or radionuclide scans. Stick to a logical reporting format like the one given below.

Observations → Interpretation → Principal Diagnosis → Differentials → Further Management.

Allocate your time wisely and focus on clinical relevance.

Refine your oral exam approach

The oral/viva component tests a mix of skills, including image interpretation, reasoning, communication, and clinical judgement. So, practice discussing cases, ranking differentials, and explaining your thought process clearly.

Familiarise with the risr/assess platform

Familiarising yourself with the tools of the platform is important. Make use of the instructional video, which is available on the RCR website, to get used to image scrolling, zooming, annotating, and using broadcast mode. It will improve your confidence and reduce stress on exam day.

That’s all for mastering the three components of the FRCR Part 2B exam. A clear understanding of the exam, regular practice, and a strategic viva preparation are very important to clear the final hurdle of FRCR seamlessly and thus achieve the highly coveted FRCR title.
